City receives EU Mission Label for its work towards carbon neutrality

10/10/2024

This Monday, the European Commission awarded the Mission Label to Porto and 19 other cities that are part of the European Union’s Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities. This award is the result of the work the municipality has developed to achieve climate neutrality.

The efforts made by the Municipality are evident in the Porto Climate Contract, which foresees an EUR 2.2 billion investment in the city of Porto to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The plan includes a budget spread over five main fields of action, supported by public, municipal, private and citizen investment.

‘The European Union (EU) Mission Label celebrates the bold steps cities are taking towards climate neutrality. Their commitment paves the way for a sustainable and resilient future for all our communities. The European Commission will continue to support cities on this journey’, said Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, in a statement.

The news was well received in the municipality, as it represents a further acknowledgement of the environmental work being carried out.

Leading by example

‘The work developed is very serious, multidisciplinary and committed to the present and the future of Porto and its people. Climate change is one of the most challenging issues of this century, and it is very important for Porto to be among the most involved cities, leading by example’, the Deputy Mayor of Porto, Filipe Araújo, reacted.

‘This is a collective city project, as the growing interest and membership of organisations and citizens in the Porto Climate Pact has shown us. This pact perfectly reflects the collaboration and intervention of multiple stakeholders towards a common goal’, the Councillor for the Environment and Climate Transition added.

The EU Mission Label recognises the quality of the work carried out and is awarded on the basis of an assessment by the European Investment Bank, the Joint Research Centre and the Cities Mission Secretariat.

The other cities that received the label were: Aachen, Münster (Germany), Trikala (Greece), Miskolc (Hungary), Eilat (Israel), Bologna, Bergamo, Milan, Prato, Turin (Italy), Liepāja (Latvia), The Hague (Netherlands), Bucharest, Suceava (Romania), Ljubljana, Kranj (Slovenia), Gothenburg, Gävle, Umeå (Sweden).
