Campanhã Intermodal Terminal is the first public building in the country to achieve gold level in environmental certification
12/02/2025
The Campanhã Intermodal Terminal (TIC) was awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification with 60 points, which corresponds to the gold level, out of four possible ones (certified, silver, gold, and platinum). The transport hub thus becomes the first public building to obtain this certification level in the country.
LEED certification is the most internationally renowned system for assessing buildings’ environmental merit currently awarded in more than 150 countries.
Inaugurated on 20 July 2022, TIC became an important transport hub, with a major impact on the City of Porto and the northern region. A large and impactful project, of recognised environmental greatness.
The work was carried out by GO Porto and resulted in the first infrastructure in Portugal to connect all modes of transport in a simple and efficient way, becoming the centre for road departures and arrivals in Porto and the northern region.
Located in the eastern part of the city, the TIC is a transport hub that integrates a bus terminal for passenger buses, the metro network, and the railway network into a single facility.
Sustainable and functional
Anyone arriving to Porto via the TIC can quickly connect to anywhere in the city, using the metro, train or city bus.
The space is not just a sustainable facility that promotes greater and better mobility. Functionality is another key element of this project. In the TIC, there are no predefined boarding bays for the different operators. Whenever a bus arrives, the management system reads its licence plate and assigns it a station.
This way, all passengers can see, in real time, the bay assigned to their intended destination All platforms have sensors to monitor available spaces and optimise their use.
TIC is a revolutionary architecture and engineering project with a total gross construction area of 24,000 square metres. It is also transformative in the environmental sustainability field, as it houses a 4.6 hectare urban park.
Gas reduction
The hub is located under the largest green roof ever installed on a public building in the city, helping to absorb air pollution and minimising the visual impact of the terminal.
The TIC is expected to contribute to a significant reduction in greenhouse gases in the centre of Porto. The estimate is that, over a five-year period, there will be a reduction of around 5.2 tonnes of the carbon dioxide (CO2) coming out of the exhaust pipes.
The Porto City Council believes this equipment represents a commitment to efficient and sustainable public transport, as well as a major contribution to the Porto Climate Pact, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
