Porto maintains top rating as a global leader in climate action

Porto has once again been recognised at the CDP Europe Awards as a global leader in climate action, featuring on the prestigious CDP – Carbon Disclosure Project “A List”. The awards, presented this week in the French capital, aim to foster debate and inspire major decision-makers to take urgent action in the fight against climate change.
The ceremony in Paris was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Porto and City Councillor for the Environment and Sustainability, Catarina Araújo, alongside Rui Pimenta, President of AdEPorto – Porto Energy Agency, the entity providing technical support for the monitoring and continuous improvement of municipalities.
The “Invicta” city was one of only 120 cities worldwide – and one of 15 in Europe – to achieve the maximum rating for decarbonisation and climate change adaptation, being included for the fifth time in this list, which evaluated a total of 738 cities.
To achieve an A rating, municipalities must present a city-wide emissions inventory, define a future renewable energy target, and publish a formal climate action plan. The CDP also assesses the cities’ climate risk and vulnerability assessments, as well as the existence of a climate adaptation plan demonstrating how they will address climate risks.
Notably, among various measures undertaken, Porto City Council implemented the Porto Climate Pact, which currently boasts 295 institutional subscribers and over 2,000 individual signatories. As a result of the city’s commitment to this field, the European Commission selected Porto in 2022 as one of the 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, recognising the city’s path towards a resilient and sustainable future. Porto is also a member of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
