Climate action

FEUP is strongly committed to contributing to the SDGs, specifically regarding climate change, with many initiatives:

  • Installation of photovoltaic panels with the 1st phase already covering around 10% of consumption in 2021;
  • Implementation of energy efficiency measures, with LED lighting everywhere, indoors and outdoors, in 2022;
  • Promotion of more sustainable mobility, especially by raising awareness of the use of bicycles;
  • Introduction in beverage vending machines of the ‘no cup‘ option at a reduced price, to reduce consumption, especially of plastic;
  • Installation of chargers for electric cars and bicycles;
  • Organisation of “Repair Café” events for repairing small household appliances;
  • Promotion of organic gardens together with Misericórdia do Porto (Porto charity and social welfare institution);

In terms of Education, the EDS@FEUP project – Education for Sustainable Development at FEUP – (between 2022 – 2025), aims to change the curricular units so as to provide students with skills that allow them access to professional and personal activities guided by the SDGs. Also noteworthy is the important role of research and innovation projects related to the SDGs in partnerships with external organisations.

Testimony

FEUP is aligned with the Porto Climate Pact, a key instrument to reinforcing our commitment to fighting climate change. The synergies originated in this Pact will allow Porto to achieve carbon neutrality. FEUP accepts the Pact’s goals in its Education, Research, and Innovation activities, as well as in Management.
