Porto’s beaches awarded Blue Flag and Gold Quality status

08/05/2026

The beaches of Pastoras, Carneiro, Ourigo, Ingleses, Luz, Gondarém, Molhe, Homem do Leme and Aquário will once again fly the Blue Flag for this year’s bathing season, an international distinction recognising excellence in water quality, safety standards and environmental management along Porto’s seafront. In addition, eight beaches will also receive the “Gold Quality” distinction.

The Blue Flag designation is granted on the basis of strict criteria relating to environmental quality, waste management, environmental information and education, as well as the availability of appropriate and safe infrastructure.

Particular emphasis is also placed on inclusion, with two beaches – Homem do Leme Beach and Carneiro Beach – classified as “Accessible Beaches”, ensuring suitable conditions for people with reduced mobility and promoting universal access to public spaces.

Gold Quality distinction

The “Gold Quality” distinction recognises the consistent excellence of bathing water quality over the previous five bathing seasons (2020–2024). Aquário Beach is the only exception, as it has only been officially designated as a bathing area since 2022.

As the bathing season approaches, support, surveillance and awareness-raising measures will be reinforced to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of these spaces.

This recognition reflects the ongoing work carried out by Águas e Energia do Porto, particularly in monitoring water quality, maintaining bathing areas and promoting good environmental practices through educational initiatives led by the Pavilhão de Água (Water Pavilion), the Blue Flag’s Blue Centre.

Reinforcing its identity as a “Porto do Mar” (“Porto of the Sea”), where the relationship with the ocean is reflected in quality of life, environmental enhancement and the safe and sustainable enjoyment of the coastline, the city once again strengthens its position as a leading urban beach destination through the renewal of the Blue Flag designation for its bathing areas. This international recognition attests to the excellence of water quality, safety and environmental management along Porto’s waterfront.
